How to tie a square knot

The square knot, sometimes called a "reef knot" is the most popular knot to use as it is easy to make and easy to untie. Once you have made a few square knots, you will certainly get the hang of it and be able to do it in your sleep. Caution: Do knot make square knots while you are asleep. Here are some simple steps to tying your first square knot:

Materials That You Will Need: Two ropes (or one with two ends)

Step One: For your first knot, it is best to use ropes of the same length. These ropes should also be as thick, or as close to it, as one another. Hold up the two ropes with one in each hand.

Step Two: Cross the ropes to make an X shape.

Step Three: Wrap one rope around the other as if you were tying your shoes.

Step Four: Wrap the rope you used in step three around the other rope once more. Once more you will form an X shape.

Step Five: Wrap the rope you used in step four around the other rope once more, to the left side.

Step Six: Pull the ropes in the opposite directions in order to tighten the wrap and there you have your first square knot.

If you did not get it on the first try, try, try again. Square knots are the perfect way to affix two ropes to one another and frankly should be the way to go any time you need to perform such a task. As mentioned earlier, once you have done a few square knots properly, you will be able to make these in your sleep. But don't do them in your sleep.

Happy Knotting!
